Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) is a solvent-free sample preparation technology. The arrows/fibers are either coated with a polymer, a sorbent or even both of them.

After the arrow/fiber has punctured the septum of the sample vessel the fiber is extended by pressing down the punch. Once the adsorbent is exposed, molecules of the analyte are adsorbed. This results in a strong enrichment of the analyte relative to the sample. The fiber is than directly inserted into the chromatograph injector for analysis.
